Information about location is very important to every one of us; overtime, every organization as well as individual generate and accumulate location related data, eg. Government generate data about citizens, taxpayers, land utilization, planning, and zoning, while businesses keep updating their customer addresses, businesses need to locate new potential for marketing purposes or for opening new branches. Bank and insurance able to provider more tailored scheme if they can related customers and demographic data with location information. Politician needs to know where their voters and opinions to maintain their leadership.
Organization invests in software such as Geographical Information System or known as GIS to manage all these complex data. GIS mainly help storing, visualizing and analysing geo related data for better understanding and decision making. Besides GIS complex system, organization also has to keep investing in updating geo contents such as mapping, aerial imagery, topology survey, demographic, zoning, economic data etc.
In a typical Government office, GIS is normally under planning (or town) department and specially operate by trained technician. Often time GIS is isolated from Information Technology Departments, and less coordination from both departments which create investment redundancy and data silo, referring to data which is potentially useful to organization is being underutilized.
With all the system, data and managing this complex system, making GIS initiatives too expansive to many organizations, yet typical organization only used 15-20% of the system functionalities. Our study shown than only 70% of municipality or town council in South East Asia can’t efforts to invest in GIS despite the benefits and demand of such system.
With the widespread Internet broadband services, many complex enterprise platforms can be delivered or outsourced via web delivery model. Examples are in online banking, ticketing, recruitment, accounting, procurement etc. Google with Google Earth is paving mass awareness about geo related information and enabling innovating services such as Geo Sense.
Geo Sense is a location information provider, offering GIS software, geo data hosting, and basic geo content services “on demand” or via Internet. Saving users from investing in such complex software, hardware, extended data and dedicated staff. Geo Sense is enabling organization to focus their resources on their core organization mission.
